BOXBOROUGH -- Troopers from the State Police Leominster barracks gave up on a pursuit of a vehicle reportedly traveling 128 miles per hour early Thursday.
Lt. Eric Anderson, a spokesman for the State Police, said troopers spotted the gray 2001 Volkswagen Golf on Route 495 North at 2:03 a.m.
Troopers made multiple attempts to stop the vehicle before initiating pursuit, Anderson said, but abandoned the chase when the driver exited the highway at Route 110 in Littleton.
"When conditions aren't safe, our supervisors cancel the pursuit, so we stepped out of it," Anderson said.
He added that Littleton Police also tried unsuccessfully to pursue the vehicle.
Marlboro Police later received a stolen vehicle report from the car's owner, Anderson said. The investigation is ongoing, he said.
