SKIPPACK, Pa. (AP) - The idea of closing a state police barracks in southeastern Pennsylvania at night and on weekends didn't fly. A test tried at a suburban Philadelphia barracks has been called off.
State Police Commissioner Frank Pawlowski says under the pilot project no clerk was on duty at the entrance to the barracks in Skippack on nights or weekends.
People who went to the barracks had to pick up a phone in the lobby which connected them to police personnel, usually offsite.
Pawlowski says the test seemed to work well but "from a public relations standpoint" it was a "disaster." He says people "want to see live troopers" there.
A spokesman says the state police will have to seek an exemption from Gov. Ed Rendell's state employee hiring freeze to restore staffing around the clock.
