The Oregon State Police arrested a Washington man after finding opium and more than $400,000 in his vehicle during a traffic stop last week on Interstate 5 at Salem.
David Eyvaz Saee, 56, of Bothell, Wash., was driving a rented Nissan Xterra south just before 10 a.m. when he was pulled over for speeding, said Lt. Gregg Hastings, a state police spokesman.
A search with the help of a Salem police officer and drug dog found two ounces of opium, worth an estimated $2,500, and $419,425 in cash in the SUV. While Saee was booked into the Marion County Jail, a 59-year-old passenger was not arrested.
Saee was arraigned today on charges of possession and distribution of a controlled substance, said Deputy District Attorney Paige Clarkson. He was released after posting $6,000 bail.
