Requirements/Overview

Every member of the Maryland State Police is held to the same standards. In order to be accepted into the application process you must:
Be a United States Citizen.
Possess a high school diploma or GED.
Possess a valid driver's license in any state and a satisfactory driving record.
Binocular far and near visual acuity, with or without correction, must be 20/20.
Be at least 20 years of age but not older than 59.
Be in excellent physical condition.
Have a good reputation and sound moral character.
Not have any current court orders relating to domestic violence.
Be truthful in every stage of the application process.
If you possess the minimum qualifications listed above, we encourage you to attend an Applicant Orientation.

Additional Information

You cannot begin the Maryland State Police application process until you have attended an Applicant Orientation.
The hiring process for Trooper Candidates is structured, rigorous and detailed. It is designed to help select those applicants who are most qualified. You must successfully complete each step to move on in the process.

The first step for any applicant is the Applicant Orientation, an open-house orientation conducted by members of the Recruitment Staff.

During the Applicant Orientation you will learn much more about the Maryland State Police through discussions and video presentations. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions to decide if the Maryland State Police is right for you.

All Applicant Orientations begin promptly at 7:00 p.m.

You will not be admitted once the doors have closed. You should plan to spend three hours at the Applicant Orientation.

Appropriate business attire (a jacket and tie for men and a pant suit or skirt for women) is expected. Please do not arrive in casual attire such as khakis or jeans as you will not be admitted.

Please be sure to bring the following items when you attend:

A Black Pen
A Note Pad
Your Valid Driver's License
Your calendar or Day Planner so you may record future test dates.
Orientations are held throughout the State. To view the dates, times and locations of Applicant Orientations, please follow the Job Announcement URL.

When you have chosen the date and location, arrive on time and appropriately attired.

There is no need to contact the Recruitment Unit prior to attending your Applicant Orientation.

Functional Fitness Assessment
You will be evaluated based on a standardized set of criteria. The standards are as follows:

Push-Ups: eighteen (18) in Twisted Evil one minute
Sit-Ups: twenty-seven (27) in one minute
Flexibility: approximately 1.5 inches beyond toes (while seated)
1.5 Mile Run: maximum time of 15 minutes and 20 seconds (15:20)
Handgun Trigger Pull: must pull trigger ten (10) times with each hand.
Written Examination
You will complete a 100 question multiple-choice written examination based upon a study guide you receive prior to the date of the exam.

Oral Interview
You will sit before an interview board comprised of three members of the Department. You will be asked personal background and problem solving questions. You will also need to display interpersonal skills and knowledge of the Maryland State Police.

Polygraph and Background Investigation
You must submit to a detailed polygraph examination. In addition, an investigator will research your background by contacting your friends, relatives, employers, schools, etc.

Medical and Psychological Examinations
If you successfully complete all steps listed above you may receive a Conditional Offer of Employment (COE). After the COE you will undergo extensive medical and psychological screenings, including a written psychological test and interview with the Department Psychologist.

Police Selection Committee
Upon the completion of all the above-listed steps, your employment package will be assigned to a member of the Police Selection Committee. A comprehensive review of all elements of the process will be conducted and presented to the collective Committee which is comprised of a cross-section of both sworn and civilian members of the Department. The Committee selects the candidates whose credentials are most likely to meet the challenges of a career as a Trooper.

Note:
It is the goal of the Maryland State Police to hire applicants who possess the qualifications and the dedication to become a Trooper. Please understand that if you successfully complete all phases of this process, you may receive a Final Offer of Employment. Trooper Candidates are hired based upon the needs of the Department. Successful completion of all phases of the hiring process does not guarantee a Final Offer of Employment.
