CHP officer struck, killed on 60 Freeway

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A California Highway Patrol officer was killed Monday morning when he was struck by a car while directing traffic on the 60 Freeway.
The incident happened at Azusa Avenue.
The officer was airlifted to a local trauma center, where he later died from his injuries.
The eastbound 60 Freeway was shut down at the 605 Freeway connector to Azusa.

HACIENDA HEIGHTS - A California Highway Patrol officer died this morning after he was involved in traffic collision on the 60 Freeway. The officer, whose name has not yet been released, was responding to a single car crash on the eastbound 60 Freeway when another two cars crashed and collided with the officer. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died as a result of his injuries, Officer Mark Garrett said.
The eastbound 60 Freeway from the 605 Freeway to Azusa Avenue remain closed as CHP officers investigate the circumstances of the traffic collision, which occurred around 4:30 a.m., said CHP Spokesman Terry Liu.
"They are conducting an investigation," officer Anthony Martin said. "I can't say any more at this time."
