PostSubject: Oral Board!!!   Thu Jan 08, 2009 10:03 pm

4 years ago, when i was applying to become a cadet with the Maryland State Police, I had the "HONOR" of a board interview. It was my 1st job interview, and I was extremely nervous!!! She(interviewer) TORE ME UP!!!!! had me speaking in circles, stuttering, u name it! one question was: why the MSP? I want to help ppl(you can help ppl with any dept) I was Stuck!!! Anything I said she turned it around and made my head spin. Another Q asked was: If your friend and co-worker was stealing supplies from the job would you turn them in to the boss? Im thinkin will tell them what they wanna hear, so i say yes! Immediately she says "no you wouldnt, do you mean to tell me that you would tell on your friend..." i was a mess at this point! Anyway at the end she told me my processing will stop here... But the cool thing was she told me wat i did wrong and wat i could do next time. A week later i found out that they pushed me through to the next level. Dont know how! I was too exited to ask any Q's. I didnt get the job though, right b4 getting the final offer i got the no thanks letter. So i did 4yrs AF, and now going back to apply for the position of trooper! Since the Board for cadet was tough, I imagine that the Trooper Board is hell. Please offer any advice, tell me wat kind of Q's were on your Board. I know i am not the only one who's nervous...Help Us Out!!! Thanks in advance!!!!!

It really depends or the three who will interview you and what barrack. Some interviewersare hard and some are not. I was blessed with interviewers that were not, I was nervous just like you but they told me to be calm take my time and just answer.

On the freind stealing some you gave the right answer because I said that I would talk to my freind about the his error in his actions and how it could mess us both up. I also had a female Trooper as one of the interviewers, she change it to if we both troopers and I was her partner and we were in a situation were we have to patdown a subject and she took money out of the subjects pocket and put it into hers what would I do. I said would turn you in. So I think your answer was good.

I will pm you later!

Thanks for the insight! I just took my oral board for Ocean City (Summer/Seasonal position, as I'm not done with college yet) and it was rough. I gave them honest answers, and I don't believe that I tripped up or contradicted myself anywhere. I just don't know if my answers were the 'right' answers. I'm glad I'm not the only one who's worried about an interview! Good luck to you, FutrTrPR! It sounds like you should be OK since you have an idea of what's coming, now.

For what it's worth here's my 2 cents: Save the "I want to help people" speech. They hear it from every applicant that walks in there. Instead try these, You want to uphold the tradition of excellence that agency x instills in their Troopers or officers. You want the challenge that only the training they provide can give you. You want the respect of fellow Troopers and/or officers that comes from being associated with Agency x. You feel you have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to preform at the high standards they set. You walk in with the "I'm a helper kind of guy" speech and you might as well tell them you just want to drive fast and pick up chicks. It might be as helpful and will certainly get them to laugh.

Like Quartermaster said just take your time, think for a couple of seconds or so and give your answer.
