WILL THE STATE POLICE EVER TAKE LATERALS?

I'VE HEARD SOME TALK ABOUT IN MARYLAND BUT I DON'T KNOW IF IT WOULD EVER HAPPEN.

The CHP does not accept laterals. Each officer is hired based on individual merit through an equal testing/evaluation process. Additionally, all persons must attend the entire academy training regimin; except, those officers who are reinstating to the department from disability retirement or resignation - provided such is accomplished within a certain timeframe. They, then, attend a shortened, modified academy to bring them up to speed on any changes in law, policy or procedure.

If you are talking MD, I highly doubt it anytime soon. They think of themselves as the best agency in the state with the hardest academy and you arent putting on that uniform until you last the full 6 months in the live-in academy.

Nevada DPS recently started requiring all new hires to complete the basic Nevada POST academy and thereafter, Highway Patrol specifics. I imagine for liability reasons.

The only ones I know of are Indiana (abbreviated academy, about 10 or 12 weeks I think), Arizona (local laws at the academy and 6 to 8 weeks post academy at the HP headquarters for some additional trooper goodies) and Florida (abbreviated 10 to 12 weeks).

The Nevada DPS Academy was nothing like a military boot camp. A veteran wouldn't have any problems. Low stress when in the classroom, except for periods of actual "hands on" training.

We recently had a Trooper from the Washington State Patrol lateral over and he prefers NHP to WSP.

I see more city officers and deputies lateral to NHP, than out of state Troopers. Better pay, better equipment and less politics. Obviously, the DPS concept also allows lateraling to P&P, Investigations, Fire Marshall, Game Warden, Capitol Police, etc., within the DPS.

I don't think Maryland State Troopers would take Laterals in with open arms.

I don't either because all that you go through in the academy to become a Trooper and to have officers lateral over that haven't gone through it, would probably be a tough pill for them to swallow.

That is tough for a Trooper who went through the academy to take I think.
