In Memoriam
Mark Falkenhan
Firefighter / Paramedic
Lutherville Volunteer Fire Company, Maryland

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE IN PDF FORMAT (JANUARY 21, 2011)

It is with the deepest sorrow that Lutherville Volunteer Fire Company announces the Line of Duty Death of Firefighter / Paramedic Mark Falkenhan. Mark, just 43-years old, was a devoted husband, and proud father of two sons.

Mark died on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 while searching for trapped victims in a four-alarm apartment fire at the Towson Crossing Apartments in Hilendale. Mark was performing search and rescue on the third floor when he was overcome by heavy fire conditions after a flashover occurred.

Mark worked for the Secret Service after retiring as a career firefighter from the Baltimore County Fire Department. He was a life member and past Chief of the Middle River Volunteer Ambulance Rescue Company. In addition, Mark was an accomplished and well respected instructor for the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute.

We will miss Mark dearly and our deepest sympathy goes out to Mark’s wife and two sons. Every member of LVFC is hurting after such a tragic accident.

Donations
Donations for Mark’s sons can be made to: Baltimore County Fallen Firefighters Foundation – Mark Falkenhan Fund. Checks can be mailed to P.O. Box 20128 Towson, MD 21284.

"I knew Mark personally. (I) met him on his first day on the job when he came to work with us. He was a friend and he a great person." - Baltimore County Fire Chief John J. Hohman

"It's a tragedy this man died in the line of duty saving lives." - Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz

Message from the Falkenhan Family:

I would like to thank everyone for their support and prayers as we deal with the loss of Mark. He was a great husband and an amazing father to his sons – Christian and Garrett – and he will be dearly missed.

Mark was known as a firefighter and a paramedic, but he was much more. He was a devoted loving husband and father. He was also a son, brother, uncle, friend, teacher and mentor to so many people. He had a smile that went across his whole face and lit up any room he ever entered. He never met someone who didn’t automatically become his friend. All he ever wanted in life was to help others.

We would not be able to get through this tragic event without the outpouring of love and support from family, friends and the general public along with the love and assistance for the Baltimore County Fire Department, the U.S. Secret Service, Lutherville Volunteer Fire Co., Middle River Volunteer Ambulance and Rescue Co. and countless other career and volunteer fire stations from throughout the country.

We take some solace in knowing that Mark did not die alone in that apartment fire and that his last act on Earth was risking his life to save someone else’s. Mark spent his entire adult life in public service and we have some peace knowing that his impact on this world will be felt for many years to come.

Prayers are being said for the family and the Fire Department family that Mark has made. Not only did he love to help people, but he touched everyone that he ever meet. RIP Mark, You are missed.
